Kelly got up the next morning at 8 and went into the kitchen. She decided
to take brownies and got out the mix she had bought. Bo and Libby were
up soon after that and at 12 30, they left to go to Peter's.
"Peter said to get on the freeway and then get off at Beach Blvd."
Kelly said, giving Bo the first set of instructions
"Beach? Okay then what?"
Kelly looked back down at the instructions "Go down to the light and
hang a left. Then go about 3 or 4 lights to 35th"
"No problem."
Bo got on the freeway like Peter said and after a few miles, he saw
the exit for Beach. He turned down it and turned left, looking for 35th.
"Ok, once we reach 35th we turn right then look for Wyler Drive." Kelly
told him as she helped him look
"There it is."
Bo turned right on 35 and the third street was Wyler. "What's
the number?" He asked as he turned down it.
"Its number 11202 and its a big brick house."
"Like that one?" Bo said pointing out a rust colored brick house
that was halfway down the block. He parked in front of it and shut off
the van.
Kelly looked at the house for a moment "Yep this must be the place,
he said you couldn't miss it." she said. "Ya ready?"
Bo sighed, a little nervous. He picked up the container of brownies
and nodded. "Let's do it."
Kelly chuckled and patted his arm. "Relax Honey. I know he's Rosco's
cousin, but i don't think hes going to throw you in jail on your first
meeting."
"It's in his blood."
Kelly snickered and opened her door. "It'll be fine." she said.
Bo and Kelly got out of the van and got Libby out of her car
seat. They walked up the sidewalk to the door and Bo rang the doorbell.
The door opened a moment and a middle aged woman smiled at them. "Yes?"
she asked and then smiled again. "Would you happen to be Bo and Kelly Duke?"
"Yes Ma'am we are." Bo smiled proudly.
"I'm Linda, Peter's wife." she said and stepped aside. "Would you please
come in?"
Bo nodded at the red haired woman with the kind face and smile and
let his wife go in first, he followed and closed the door. "Nice to meet
you."
"Its nice to meet you to." She said and then grinned at Bo. "We've
heard lots about you...especially Bo."
"Uhh, is that good or bad Ma'am?" Bo asked, his cheeks growing warm.
Linda smiled. "Its good." she said reasurringly. "Peter is out on the
deck grilling. If you will follow me." she said and lead the way through
the house to the deck
"Peter." she said. "Our guests are here."
Peter was turning over the ribs he had put on not to long ago. He looked
up and smiled. "You must be Bo Duke. Rosco has told me a lot about you."
He said coming over and shaking his hand.
"Yep, that's me." Bo said as they shook hands. "I guess my reputation
preceeds me, but what has he said exactly?"
"That you and your cousin have given him enough baths in the bodies
of water around Hazzard to last him for two lifetimes." He turned to Kelly
and shook her hand. "Good to see you again Kelly. I'm really glad to get
you on my team of Rangers."
"Thank you sir." Kelly said. "I'll try my best to do a good job."
"I'm sure you will. Well have a seat, make yourselves at home."
Peter said pointing to the picnic table and patio furniture that was on
the deck.
"Peter, you mentioned someting about a program you wanted to start
over the phone yesterday." Kelly said as she sat down
"Yeah I did." He said as he closed the cover to the grill and sat down
next to Bo and Kelly. Linda brought a high chair outside and Libby was
put in it, under the patio umbrella to keep her out of the sun. "I am starting
a Reserve program for the Rangers."
"You mean something like what the military does where they train and
then the soldiers just come in once a month or when they are needed?" Kelly
asked
"Right, we will take the recruits and train them every weekend for
a month, and then they will have to go on duty once a month or whenever
the Rangers need extra help." Peter turned his attention to Bo. "I want
you to join them Bo."
Bo looked stunned. "Me? Why? I have no experience with law enforcement."
Peter shook his head. "Not true, you and your cousin were once deputies
and everytime you had to clear your name, what you did was law enforcement.
The investigating and the pursuing, that's all part of it."
"But...Rangers carry weapons and I can't because of my probation."
Peter smiled. "Your probation is over...for you and your Cousin. I
looked into it and I petitioned for it to end. I got word last week that
you and Luke have been given full pardons. The Rangers will teach you how
to use a gun and give you a permit for it."
"Thank you." Bo said a little stunned. This was something he
was going to have to tell Luke the next time he talked to him. He fell
silent for a moment and thought it over. "I would be honored Sir. Thank
you."
"You bet, and be sure to tell Luke about the probation." Peter got
up and opened the cover on the grill, he flipped them over again and began
to paint them with sauce. "This is almost ready." He said to Linda.
Linda nodded. "I'll go inside and get the Potato Salad." she said and
walked to the patio door. "What would everyone like to drink? I'll get
that while i'm in there to."
"Tea is fine for me." Bo said and looked at his wife who nodded.
"And milk for Libby, please." Kelly added.
"What about you Peter?"
"A beer please."
"Alright, be right back" she said and disappeared inside the house
Bo got up from the table and went over to the grill where Peter was
tending to the ribs. "So you really think I would make a good Ranger Reserve?"
"From what Rosco told me, I say you would."
Bo nodded. "I'll do my best too."
"Great, I'll start the papers on Monday, but in the meantime, let's
chow down."
The barbecue lasted long into the evening and by 8 o'clock, the Dukes
and Coltranes parted ways. Bo and Kelly had enjoyed themselves immensly
and spoke about the good time and how much they looked forward to working
with Peter. They got home and put their exhausted daughter to bed and went
into the living room to relax and unwind.
"So you really are going to be a Reserve Ranger?" Kelly asked as she
brought Bo a cup of hot cocoa and sat down beside him on the couch, sipping
her own.
Bo nodded "I still can't believe he asked me." he said. "Well, i mean
if Peter thinks i can do, i believe i can. I think it will be interesting."
"I agree with him, I think you can do it too. After all, you and Luke
caught more criminals in Hazzard then Rosco did at one time."
Bo laughed. "True, we did." he said and then grinned at his wife. "I
guess this means you going to have to teach me how to use a gun, since
the only thing i know how to shoot is a bow and arrow."
"Oh the Rangers will train you to use a gun and we can go to
target practice together on the weekends." Kelly sighed and leaned against
her husband. "I can't believe it, both of us are going to be COPS....a
COP family." She snickered suddenly covering her mouth.
Bo raised an eyebrow. "And what is so funny?"
Kelly uncovered her mouth and looked at him. "Well it just occurred
to me that you will be slapping cuffs on people instead of getting cuffed
yourself!"
Bo laughed. "Yeah your right." he said, "I think i'm going to like
this job." he added, laughing again
Kelly started to laugh when the doorbell rang out. She looked at her
husband curiously as she sat up and set her cocoa down on the coffee table.
She got up and opened the door. She gasped at who was behind it and she
blinked her eyes to make sure it was not a delusion.
It was no delusion, there really was a shortly cropped brown-haired
woman with green eyes and a warm smile standing behind the door with a
young teenage girl that resembled her mother except her hair was long.
"Christine?" Kelly asked.
Christine nodded and smiled. "Yep its me." she said. "Heard you had
moved to Houston and thought we'd drop by."
Kelly covered her mouth, genuinely surprised to see the old friend
she hadn't seen in 3 years. "It's been ages! Please come in!" She stepped
aside and Christine and her daughter Stephanie came into the house. "It's
so good to see you!" Kelly said as the two women embraced."
"Its good to see you to." Christine said and looked at her daughter.
"You remember Stephanie, dont' you?"
Kelly nodded and smiled. "You've gotten so big!" She mouthed clearly
to Stephanie, who was deaf.
Bo was still sitting on the couch as he watched what was going on.
He stood up and cleared his throat.
"Oh my gosh I'm sorry, I forgot to introduce you to someone." She motioned
for Bo to come over there and she cleared her throat. "Bo, this is Christine
and Stephanie Farrow. Ladies, this is my husband, Bo Duke."
"Hello Bo." Christine as she held out her hand.
Bo took her hand and shook it. "Hi. Nice to meet you." he said
Christine turned to Kelly and winked. "I told you, you would eventually
find someone else."
Kelly blushed and nodded. "You were right. I would introduce you to
our daughter but she is asleep." She turned to her husband. "Christine
and I went to the academy together and were partners in Atlanta."
Bo nodded and grinned. "So you know all her little secrets."
"Bo!" Kelly said as she smacked him lightly on the arm.
Bo chuckled and looked at Christine's daughter. "Hi," he said and held
out his hand. "I'm Bo."
Stephanie took his hand and shook it, having read his lips. "Hi." She
said in that distinctive way that a deaf person talks.
Bo was surprised, but he quickly covered it and smiled at the girl.
He looked at her mother.
Christine saw his surprise. "When Stephanie was 4, we were in a car
accident. It killed my husband and took her hearing. She has a little bit
of it, but not very much. She can talk as you heard, but she also signs
and reads lips."
Bo nodded and looked back at Stephanie. He knew a little sign language
but not much and he thought for a moment what the sign for friends was.
After a moment he crossed he index fingers, making them into an X and then
flipped them over and did it again. He smiled at Stephanie again.
The young teenager smiled widely and repeated the sign and pointed
to him. "Friends." She said.
Bo nodded. "Friends." he said
Christine and her daughter staid until about 11 and left the house,
after telling Kelly she would see her in the morning at work. Shortly after
Bo and Kelly went to bed.
Kelly woke up when her alarm went off at 6am. She yawned and sat up.
She soon discovered her husband was not in bed, but finding him would have
to wait until she had a shower and got dressed.
By about 6:30, Kelly was showered and dressed and she came into the
kitchen and she found Bo there. "There you are." she said. "What are doing
up this early?"
"Good Morning!" Bo said cheerfully as he set two plates of eggs, bacon,
toast down on the table and poured two cups of coffee. "I thought it would
be nice to have breakfast together." He smiled as he sat down at the table.
"Wow." Kelly said and sat down at the table as well. "This is nice,
but you didn't really have to."
"Of course I did! You need a good breakfast so I made you one. It is
one of the perks of having a husband that is a college student."
Kelly laughed and picked up her fork. She took a bite of her eggs and
then her bacon and smiled at her husband again "This is good Bo." she said
"I can cook if I really try." He said as he started his breakfast.
"So are you excited being partners with Christine again?"
Kelly nodded "Yeah i am. It'll be just like old times." she said
Bo nodded. "She seems like a nice lady. I bet the two of you were unstoppable
as partners."
Kelly laughed, and thought back to some of the stuff they had done
years ago. "Yeah we were. We've definatly had some adventures together."
"Did you know she was here?"
Kelly shook her head. "She got a job offer in North Carolina before
i met you and she took it. We kind of lost touch and i didn't know she
had moved out here. I guess Peter asked her to join."
Bo shook his head as he sipped his coffee. "It's the Peter Coltrane
Great Ranger Roundup."
Kelly laughed and looked at her watch. "Speaking of which, i'm going
to have to get rolling." she said as she finished eating
Bo set his cup down and got up. He put his arms around her waist, accidetly
bumping her shoulder holster. "Oops sorry Ranger lady." He said as he kissed
her. He looked down at the badge clipped to her belt and smiled. "Have
a good day, play nice with the other Rangers."
"I will and thanks for the breakfast." Kelly said "What do you have
planned for today?"
"Umm, shop for a wedding present for Luke, look at the Houston College
catalog, maybe do some more unpacking. That's all I can think of, what
do you want for dinner?"
"Hmmm....Surprise me" she said and kissed him again
Bo nodded. "Okay then I won't make anything. Surprised?" He said with
a grin.
"Bo." Kelly said chuckling as she swatted his hair. "I've got to go,
but you be a good boy and i'll see you around 6."
"Yes Ma'am!" He said giving her a salute.
Kelly picked up her keys and walked to the front door. Bo followed
her.
"Bye sweetie." she said, kissing him one last time
"Bye." He said as he watched her go down the driveway and get into
her car. She put her beige hat on and tucked her hair behind her ears.
He shook his head and blew her a kiss as she drove away.
After Kelly left, Bo went to their bedroom and started to unpack some
of the boxes. About 9, Libby woke up and he got her dressed and then fed
her. After she ate, he set her down on the living room floor and let her
play while he sat down on the sofa and started going through a Hucklebees's
catalogue, looking for a present for Luke.
Bo leaned back and put his feet up on the coffee table, he set the
catalog and started flipping through the pages. "Let's see, bedding? No.
Dishes? No." He said as he went through the pages. He came to the housewares
section that contained items for every room of the house and he smiled.
"Ahhh here we go, there is bound to be something in this section." He glanced
through the various items for the dining room and living room. Through
the endless pages of curtains, oriental rugs and patio furniture. He was
getting frustrated until he came to the outdoor section.
"Aha! Here we go...the manly section."
Bo flipped through this section of the catalog. There were weed eaters,
and gas grills, and camping equipment. The catalog suddenly turned into
a hunter's delight and his eyes grew wide as he saw rifles and weapons.
"Ohh yeah, like I am going to give my cousin a display case full of
hunting knives!"
On the bottom of the page was something that made Bo grin. "Something
for the complete barbecue fanatic! This set contains stainless steel BBQ
untensils with genuine wood handles. The 18 peice set contains spatulas,
tongs, a brush and everything else the outdoor grillman needs for the perfect
summer BBQ. Order this now and get a free Apron monogrammed with any message
you want. Perfect!" Bo smiled. "In a convenient carrying case!" Bo added
as he picked up the phone and started dialing.
"Hucklebees. How may i help you."
"Hi, I'd like to place an order please."
"Sure..I just need your name, phone number and address."
"My address is 2925 Persephone Ave. Houston, Texas, 77915. My phone
number is 713-778-3241."
There was a moment of silence while the operator typed the information
into the computer. "Ok, now your name and then the product number you wish
to order."
"My name is Bo Duke and the product is GM17115."
"Thats the Grill Masters Delight and that comes with the apron. What
would you like on the apron?"
Bo thought about it for a moment and covered his mouth so he wouldn't
deafen the poor lady on the other end of the line. He remember that Luke
had one said that he would never get married because he couldn't picture
himself in one of those red aprons with 'Kiss the Chef' written on it.
It would be the perfect gift.
"Do I get to choose what color?"
"Its 5 dollars more for colors and you can also get pictures put on
it as well for 5 more dollars."
Bo nodded and smiled widely. "I'd like the apron in red please. What
sort of pictures can you get on it?"
"We can put anything you want on it."
"Do you have kiss marks?" He said trying so hard not to laugh on the
phone.
"Yes we do."
"Okay multicolored kiss marks please and I would like the message..
KISS THE CHEF written on the apron."
"Alright. And who is this going to?"
"Uhhhh, hold on." Bo set the phone down and went to get his address
book. He flipped it to Luke's address and picked up the phone. "Luke Duke,
1304 Playa Place. Los Angeles, 90012."
"Ok, your purchase comes to a total of $55. How would you like to pay
for this?"
"Do you guys bill or do ya just take plastic?"
"Actually we do both. Whicever will be easier on you."
"Cool, okay bill me please."
"Alright sir. It takes about 3-5 days to get there and you will be
billed soon...Anything else?"
"No thank you Ma'am that's all."
"Ok. Thank you for calling Hucklebees and please call again soon."
"Thank you.. bye."
Bo hung up the phone and fell over onto the couch, he put a pillow
over his head and laughed hysterically into it. After a few moments he
took the pillow away from his face and sighed. "Luke is going to kill me."
Once Kelly got to work, she quickly found the suit number the offices
were in and went in. The room was busy, but everyone seemed to be going
about their business and didn't notice her come in. Peter came out of his
office just then and spotted her and waved her over.
Kelly went over to him and he put his hand on her shoulder and stuck
two fingers in this mouth and Whisted to get everyone's attentiom. The
office fell silent and he smiled. "Everyone.. this is Detective Kelly Duke.
She is from Georgia."
"Hi." she greeted.
Christine was sitting at a nearby desk and smiled and waved at her
"She is very good and I want all of you to show her around, get her
used to how we do things in Texas. Christine Farrow is assigned to be her
partner."
Christine grinned, stood up and walked over to them. "Just like old
times." she said
Kelly nodded. "It sure will be." she said
As everyone went back about their duties, two guys came over to introduce
themselves. One looked to be about Bo's age, tall with brown hair and the
other looked younger.
"Hi." the older of the two said. "I'm Jason Abrams." he added as he
stuck out his hand
Kelly took it and shook it. "Nice to meet you." she said
Kelly turned to the other guy, he looked like a rookie. He had black
hair and hazel eyes, looking like he was Latin in descent.
"Hi, I'm Raymond, Raymond Villa. Nice to meet you Kelly, welcome aboard."
"Nice to meet you to Raymond and thank you." she answered
Jason looked at her and saw the ring on her finger. "Uhh, you are from
Georgia huh?"
Kelly nodded "Just moved here from Hazzard, GA." she said
"Hazzard huh..." Jason rubbed his suddenly tense neck. "Your name is
Duke, do you know Bo Duke?"
"He's my husband." Kelly said, curious as to why the guy was suddenly
nervous. "Do you know him?"
Jason nodded. "It's a long story...excuse me I have to do some paperwork."
He said as he bolted from her sight.
Kelly frowned and made a mental note to ask Bo about it later.
"Oh don't worry about Jason, he's a little odd sometimes." Raymond
said as he patted her back. "I could take ya on a tour if you want."
Christine shook her head. "You go on ahead, i've got some stuff i need
to do." she said
"Yeah thanks Raymond, and bring her back to my office when you are
done, I have her id card and badge and papers for her to sign." Peter said
as he smiled at Kelly.
"Will do sir." Raymond answered and looked at Kelly "If you'll come
with me." he said and started the tour
Bo was sitting at the kitchen table. He had changed into shorts and
a t-shirt and his feet up on the table as he skimmed through the Houston
College catalog. He was alone, Libby had eaten lunch and was in her room
napping.
After a few minutes he came to the Drafting and Design Technology section
and grabbed the pencil he had stuck behind his ear and picked up a legal
pad to write the courses down on it.
"Let's see, second year....Structural Drafting, Political Science,
Geometric Dimensioning, and Research and Critical Writing. No problem.
Hummm, I need a PE course?"
Bo sighed as he flipped to the Physical Education section. "PE? Not
since I was in high school, but okay." Bo read down the list of Physical
Education classes.
He made funny faces as he read each one outloud. "Dance? HA! Volleyball?
I don't think so...Tennis? nope... AHA! Weight training!" He said as he
put the catalog down and flexes his bicep, it was solid. "Well, a guy can
always use harder muscles. I say we have a bingo!" He said as he wrote
it down and looked at the list. "I just hope they are all available when
I register next week."
The phone rang just then
Bo reached across the table and picked up the cordless phone. "Hello
Bo Duke here."
"Hey honey. I just called to see how things are going."
"Hey...Oh I just figured out what classes I want to take when I register
next week."
"You have. What are they?"
"Ummm, Structural Darfting, Geometic Dimensioning, Poli Sci, and Writing.
Oh and a PE class." He said the last part in a low voice.
"What kind of PE class?"
"Oh nothing.... umm how has your day been so far?" He said trying to
change the subject.
Kelly laughed. "Come on sweetie, what PE course? You can tell me."
Bo sighed. "Weight training, okay? It was either that or dance or vollyeball
or tennis and to be honest I don't think so! It was the only choice I had."
"Weight training is cool. Although i think your muscles already look
good."
"Think so?"
"Oh yes. Most definatly."
Bo felt his face getting warm and he rubbed his cheeks. "And you say
I'm the smooth talker?"
Kelly laughed. "I'm going to have to get going...Oh hey, quick question..When
i was touring the office earlier and meeting the people, i met a guy by
the name of Jason Abrams. Do you by chance know him?"
Bo heard his name and he gasped. "Did you say Jason Abrams?"
"Yes. So you do know him?"
The line was silent for a moment, but finally Bo answered, his voice
having gone from happy to serious. "Yeah....long story...."
"Thats what he said, before he ran off." Kelly said and stopped for
a moment, as she realized something. "Does this have to do with what happened
with Frank?" she asked quietly
"Yeah it does Kelly. When you get home we can talk about it."
"Ok. Well my shift ends at 4 so i'll be home a little bit after that...Are
you going to be alright?"
"I'll be fine Honey it's just something that I should have told you
about."
"Ok, well i'll be home in a couple of hours...Love you."
"Love you too..see ya soon."
"See you soon to...Bye."
"Bye." Bo shut off the cordless phone and thought about what had happened
with Frank and how it had involved Jason. He sighed and looked at the clock,
wishing it was already 4.
Time passed quickly and 4 o'clock came. Kelly walked in the front door
about 20 minutes after that.
"I'm home." she said
Bo came out of the kitchen, wearing a dark blue apron that said 'Bo's
kitchen, Don't like it? There is peanut butter'. He smiled when he saw
her.
"Hi..." He said as he kissed her.
"Hey. What's for dinner?"
"Umm, pork chops, mashed spuds and peas. I made some biscuits."
"Sounds good." Kelly said
Bo smiled and kissed her again. "Oh good, it's almost done."
"Great." Kelly said. "I'm going to go change clothes, i'll be back
in a minute."
"Oooh..... need any help?" He said wiggling his eyebrows up and down.
Kelly grinned and kissed him. "No, but you can help me later." she
said
"Deal!" He said as he went back into the kitchen.
Kelly went to their room and came back out a few minutes later, wearing
shorts and a t-shirt. When she came into the kitchen, Bo was at the stove
with his back turned and she decided to sneak up behind him. She tiptoed
over to him and quickly grabbed him around the waist. "Gotcha." she said.
Bo jumped back and whipped around fast. "Kelly....." He said as he
nearly knocked the pan of mashed potatoes over.
Kelly giggled. "I'm sorry honey...You ok?"
Bo nodded his head but his eyes told her the truth. "You just startled
me." He said as he went back to cooking.
Kelly knew he wasn't telling the truth, so she jumped up on the counter
next to where he was standing and leaned against the cupboard and crossed
her arms.
"Uhh....problem?" He said as he watched her.
"Okay Duke, spill it."
Bo sighed, he knew he couldn't just say nothing was wrong and she would
go away, he would have to tell her. He shook his head. "I'm sorry. Since
you told me Jason was here, its has me a little uptight."
Kelly nodded. "I can see that, you nearly went through the ceiling.
Why does Jason do this to you?" She said as she touched his shoulder gently.
Bo shook his head. "Its not really Jason, its just what went on." he
said and sighed, trying to decide how best to explain this to her. "Like
i said it does have something to do with Frank, but its not what happened
2 years ago, its what happened when he was here the first time. I never
told you the whole story, but when i was about 20, a gang came, started
trying to take over Hazzard. It was run by Frank's father and i was taken
hostage, forced to help.." Bo stopped for a moment. "Franks sister was
ok, she helped me out and Jason was also there." Bo stopped again and shook
his head. "He was not overly nice...I think he meant well, its just he
had been through enough himself that he just didn't know how to be nice."
Bo stopped again for a moment, and stirred the potatoes. "After they got
us out, he left and i never heard from him again....Like i said its just
what went on that bothers me, not necassiarly him."
"Did he do anything to try to help you?"
Bo shrugged. "Not really. I mean he pretty much told me to do whatever
they said."
"How is it that he didn't go to jail with Frank?"
"Well he really didnt' do anything wrong. I think they sent him back
to his parents with orders to undergo counseling or something like that."
Kelly sighed and rubbed his shoulder. "It's been a long time Honey.
Jason has obviously changed or he couldn't be a Ranger. I really think
you should settle this. You both are going to be on the same team, you
have to have trust."
Bo sighed, he knew she was right. "Your probably right, i should talk
to him." he said and gave her a kiss. "How did i get so lucky to marry
a smart girl like you?"
Kelly shrugged. "Well, I married you for your body remember?"
Bo shook his head and looked at his wife. "Thanks for listening honey.
I know i should have told you about this before" he said "How was work
by the way?" he added as he checked pork chops
"Good, a lot of nice people. I have my cute little desk and I got my
BADGE and ID too."
"What about the handcuffs?" Bo said with a wicked grin.
"Bo!" Kelly said, swatting him on the shoulder
"Hey watch it! Don't burn the Chef!"
Kelly hopped down off the counter. "So, when's dinner?"
Bo turned off the burners and picked up a biscuit and bit into it.
"Good stuff!" He said as he got the plates down from the cabinet.
They all sat down to dinner and Bo helped feed his daughter her dinner.
Kelly talked about how her day went and the people she met. Bo told her
about the classes he was taking. After dinner they sat down to watch a
movie on the pay channels and at 9 o'clock they all went to bed.
Kelly was brushing her teeth when she noticed Bo doing something in
front of the mirror. "Bo? What are you doing?"
Bo was standing in his pajama bottoms looking at himself in the mirror.
"Oh I don't know, maybe I need this weight training class for more than
just the credit." He said as he turned to the side and looked at his sides,
touching them.
Kelly snorted. "I don't know, you look fine to me." she said as she
rinsed her mouth out with water.
"Yeah I guess I do. I just get reminded of how old I am when I see
all those kids on the campus." He said as he sat down on the bed.
Kelly dried her hands off and turned off the light as she left the
bathroom. She came over and sat down on the bed beside her husband. "I
don't think your to old." she said
Bo started to laugh. "Well neither do I! I don't feel any different
from when we was kids on the farm. Sometimes it just dawns on me though
how much things have changed."
Kelly nodded. "Yeah i know what you mean."
"When we lost Uncle Jesse, I kept thinking about how that was the end
of the good times. I'm glad I was wrong."
Kelly smiled and kissed him. "Well i'm glad you were wrong to..Now
move so i can lay down."
Bo chuckled and crossed his arms across his chest and folded his legs
under him Indian style. "No! This is my spot now."
Kelly raised an eyebrow. "Fine then. I'll sleep on YOUR side."
Bo solved that by lying acros the bed, spreading his arms wide. "Ha!
Think again Oh Wife-o-mine."
Kelly grinned and moved so she sat down on his stomach. "Lets see who
has the last laugh." she said as she started tickling him
Bo started to laugh and squrimed to get her off of him. "No fair you
know I'm ticklish!"
"Tough." Kelly said as she continued to tickle him
"We are going to wake up Libby!" He said breathlessly from laughing.
Kelly giggled. "Your right." she said and stopped tickling her husband.
"Geez try to have fun and you get tickled to death!" Bo said as he
pulled back the covers and slipped under them.
Kelly grinned and got under the covers as well. She turned to her side
and smiled "That's not the only way we can have fun you know."
"Oh? Like what?" Bo said as he pulled the covers over their heads.
Kelly got up the next morning, ate breakfast with Bo and left the house
by 8. Meanwhile in a richer part of town, something else was about to happen.
Bridget Cook smiled sweetly as she watched over Nathan Strawhorn, 9
yr old son of Yuma Strawhorn, the newly elected mayor. Yuma had been elected
in March, sworn in two months later in May and had just finished his first
full month in office It was the first time in history that a Native American
Indian had been elected to such a prestigious office.
Bridget handed Nathan a toy car and sat down on the floor next to the
beautiful dark eyed child. "Nathan, do you know where your Daddy is today?"
The little boy looked up at her, his large eyes curious. "Papa is in
Tahlequah Oklahoma. They asked him to give a speech about being the first
Cherokee elected mayor."
Bridget nodded and smiled. "What about your Mom?"
Nathan shrugged as he played with his toy cars. "I think she is with
some of her friends at a luncheon."
"I see, I'll be right back Nat, you just play." Bridget stood up and
walked out of the large room and down the hall to the living room. She
peeked out one of the windows and watched the men mow the grass, rake the
clippings, trim the bushes. She was looking for one in particular, and
not seeing him she moved to the kitchen.
"Looking for me?" A deep voice rang out behind her and she gasped and
whipped around to see a rather husky man.
"Willie! You scared me!" She looked around and went to the fridge.
She cleared her throat and took out two sodas. "So Mr. Jenkins, how goes
the landscaping?"
Willie took the soda from her. "Thank you ma'am." he said, opening
the can. "The landscaping is coming along just fine, but the rest of my
crew should be here in an hour or so to help me finish it up."
Bridget nodded. "Very good, having help will make things go more smoothly."
She looked at him and winked. "They won't be home all day." She said in
a low voice as she took a couple of steps closer to him. "The boy is playing
right now, we can snatch him as soon as your men get here."
Willie nodded and lowered his voice "They will be here in an hour.
Remember what you are supposed to do."
"Don't worry, I'll scream and cry like I'm supposed too. You just make
sure your men understand I'm part of the deal. I don't want to get hit
too hard."
Willie smiled slightly "Understood. Wouldn't want that pretty little
head of yours to get hurt" he cleared his throat and said a little louder.
"Well thank you for the soda Ms. Cook. I think its back to work for me."
"Of course Mr. Jenkins. I will leave you to your work then." She looked
around and saw that no one was around. She leaned in and kissed Willie
on the lips. "It's gonna work out Baby, we'll have all the money in the
world and that Indian will resign his office."
"And we can get married just like i said." Willie kissed her quickly
and then was out the door
Kelly was busy doing some paperwork when the phone rang, making
her jump.
"Texas Rangers" she listened for a moment. "Yes, Mr. Mayor, i'll tell
him your on the phone." she got up and knocked on Peter's door.
"Come in." he said, looking up.
Kelly poked her head in the door. "Sir, its the mayor."
Peter nodded and reached for the phone. "Thanks Kelly."
When Kelly left, he put the headset up to his ear. "Hello? Peter Coltrane
speaking."
"Hello Ranger Coltrane, I hope my call hasn't come at a bad time."
"No, no Mr Mayor. This isn't a bad time." Peter leaned back in
his chair. "What can i do for you?"
A deep sigh rang out on the phone. "It seems there is someone in this
fair city that doesn't like me very much."
Peter narrowed his eyes "What happened Yuma?" he asked concerened,
remembering all the times that Yuma had been harrased over the years. None
of it had been to pretty and Peter had thought they had finally gotten
it stopped.
"Oh...just the usual stuff Peter. The same old "no redskin should have
that kind of power stuff", but this time they threatened not only me and
Kaya but Nathan as well. I think this time they might mean it."
Peter snorted angrily. "Getting bold are they. Did whoever say what
there plans where?"
"No, nothing specific. Normally this would not bother me, I've dealt
with threats my whole political career. But this time I'm not home to watch
over my family. I'm spending the week here in Tahlequah."
Peter nodded. "I'll dispatch some Rangers to watch your house."
he said.
"I'd appreciate that Peter, I'm a good 12 hours away and the idea of
Kaya and Nathan unprotected makes me very nervous."
"Don't worry sir. We'll keep them safe." Peter reassured him.
Yuma breathed a sigh of relief. "Thanks Peter, you've always looked
after me and I appreciate it. I'll tell ya what, I'll bring you back some
mocassins, how does that sound?"
Peter rolled his eyes. "Very funny Mr. Mayor." he said. "Do me a favor
and stick to your day job, ok."
Yuma started to laugh loudly. "You got it Peter, I'll talk to you when
I get home at the end of the week."
"Alright Yuma, take care."
"Bye Peter."
Peter hung up the phone and got up from his desk to go find Kelly
Seeing her at her desk, he went over to her. "Kelly?"
Kelly finished the last of her papers and put them in a folder for
filing. "Hey Boss, what did the Mayor have to say?"
Peter folded his arms across his chest. "He's getting some threats
against him." he told her. "At first it was only against him and his wife,
but now they have threatened his son. I told him we would send some Rangers
over to his house."
Kelly nodded. "All right we can post a few Rangers around his property,
would that be what you had in mind?"
Peter nodded. "Yes. That would be good."
Kelly looked at her watch, it was near lunchtime. "All right most of
the Rangers are at lunch, we can go as soon as they get back in say...
an hour?"
Peter nodded. "That sounds fine." he said "Why don't you go on to lunch,
i'll watch the office. I'm not that hungry."
Kelly stood up. "All right, but before I go...do you think that this
threat to Mayor Strawhorn is real?"
Peter shrugged. "I might be real or it might be someone just acting
stupid. Either way, i'm going to treat this seriously." he said and then
remember she hadn't been here for the other threats. "He's gotten some
hate mail in the past and has had his house vandalized a couple of times.
One time a bomb exploded in his mail box, luckily one was hurt."
Kelly nodded. "He's a very brave man."
"Yes he is." Peter agreed "I'm not sure how he does it sometimes but
he does." he made a shooing motion. "Now go on to lunch. We can talk about
this more a little later."
Kelly gave her boss a quick salute. "Yes sir! Ranger Duke going to
lunch, sir!" She put her hand down rapidly and did an about face and left
the room.
Peter chuckled and went back to his office.
A white van, with the slogan "The Greener Side Landscaping." in large
letters on the side with "The grass is always greener on the other side."
in smaller letters underneath it, pulled up to the gaurd gate in front
of the mayor's house.
"Can i help you?" the guard asked, coming out of the gaurd house
A young white guy with brown hair and brown eyes smiled widely. "Oh
yes we're here to help Mr. Willie Jenkins." His grin was a little too friendly.
The guard raised an eyebrow and checked his clipboard. Sure enough,
they were on the list. He looked back up. "ID, please."
"Of course..." The young man reached behind him and pulled out an employee
card from the landscaping company. It read that his name was Bob Smith.
As the guard checked the photo against the person behind the wheel,
another guard was checking the van over.
"Find anything Larry?" he asked after a moment.
"Negative Mike. He's clean."
Mike nodded and handed the id back to Bob. "Stay on the driveway, it
will take you up to the main house. Mr. Jenkins should be around there."
he leaned over and pressed the button to raise the gate. "Have a good day."
"Why thank you and the same to you." Bob Smith smiled as he put the
van in drive and drove through the gate.
Nathan had just finished lunch and Bridgett was at the sink rinsing
off the plate, when she caught sight of something out the window. She saw
the van pulling up to the house.
She smiled, but quickly bit it back and turned around. "Well Nathan."
she said. "What would you like to do now?"
Nathan drank the rest of his soda and wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
"Can we go outside and play?"
Bridgett had to keep herself from laughing out loud. How easy this
was going to be, she thought to herself. "Sure Nathan. Come on." she held
out her hand
The little boy took her outstretched hand and held it. "Can you push
me on the swing?"
Bridgett opened the door "I sure can."
"We're going to have a lot of fun outside, Bridget. Do you think
you can play football with me later on?"
"Willie?" Nathan said as he and Bridget walked through the house, heading
for the backdoor.
"Willie Jenkins, hes the groundskeeper." Bridgett quickly explained.
"I think i heard he use to play football."
"Oh....well maybe he can play with me."
"Would you like to ask him, before you get on the swing?"
Nathan let go of her hand as they walked over to the swing set
and the little boy sat down. "Nah, it can wait." He turned to look at his
nanny and sighed. "Can you push me?"
"Sure sweetie." Bridgett said and moved to stand behind him so
she could push. As she did so, she saw a brown haired young man coming
towards them. She fought to keep a grin from her face, and managed to frown.
"Who are you?!" she demanded
Bob Smith took a small hand tool from his belt and walked up
to her. "I'm nobody Lady and I'd like to keep it that way!" He swung the
little shovel, connecting it with her temple, the young woman sank to the
ground unconscious.
Nathan heard the commotion and turned to look. He immediatly saw his
nanny on the ground and a man standing over her. Nathan jumped up and ran
over to her. "Miss Bridgett!" he cried. "Are you ok?" with his attention
on her, he didn't notice what the man was doing
Bob tucked the tool back into his pocket and backed up while the little
boy looked at his nanny. He took a bottle from his fanny pack along with
a handkerchief. He unscrewed the bottle and soaked the cloth with it. He
bent down and grabbed the little boy around the waist, covering his nose
and mouth with the handkerchief. Nathan Strawhorn struggled as best he
could briefly before he too was rendered unconscious.
"All to easy." he muttered, scooping the little boy up. He looked
around briefly and to make sure they hadn't attracted attention. When he
saw they had not, he quickly made his way back to the van.
Bo had not done much that day, just puttered around the house and unpacking
the last of the boxes. He took Libby outside and watched her play in the
yard while he tuned the General. By 11 he was done and had cleaned up and
he and Libby had eaten. He was still looking over the college catalog and
decided to go look around the campus. He packed his cellular phone, his
daughter and backed his brand new Charger, named Baby, out of the garage.
"Come on Baby it is time to see what you can do!"
He packed Libby and her carseat in the backseat, making sure she was
secure. He got behind the wheel and fastened his seatbelt.
"Houston College here we come!"
The new Charger roared to life and was down the road in a flash.
Bridget Cook opened her eyes slowly, feeling a mild throbbing from her
head. She touched her temple and a small smear of blood decorated her fingertips.
She sat up slowly and looked around. She was outside and the reality of
what had happened came back to her. She grinned but it quickly had to become
a frown when she saw the butler and a maid come rushing towards her.
"Miss Cook! Are you all right?" Wilson the butler asked as he took
her by the hand and helped her to her feet.
"I think so... what happened?" She looked at the swingset and gasped.
"Where's Nathan?"
A young woman dressed in a street clothes wiped her face with a handkerchief.
"We looked everywhere for him and found nothing!"
Wilson nodded his head. "She is right Miss Cook, we just got back from
the grocery store. The gate is crashed through and we found the house deserted.
We saw you outside..."
Bridget nodded, her head was killing her. "We better call the police
Wilson."
Kelly had just finished lunch and was now enroute to the Mayor's house
with a couple of Rangers when the radio crackeled to life
"2 Delta 9er... 2 Delta 9er this is Dispatch, come in, over."
Kelly reached over and picked up the CB. "This is 2 Delta 9er. Over"
"Please hold the line...." A few seconds went by and suddenly the voice
of her Boss came over the air. "Kelly this is Peter....I need you and the
boys to double time it over to Yuma's house."
Kelly frowned, something was wrong. "What's going on?" she asked into
the mike
"I just got a call from the chief of police, Dave Brite.. they got
a call from Bridget Cook, she's the nanny of Nathan Strawhorn. She woke
up in the yard and Nathan is no where to be found."
Kelly swore softly under her breath. "We're enroute now. We should
be there in about five minutes."
"Understood...I want you to canvas that place for any clues and be
sure and question Miss Cook thoroughly, she was the last one that saw Nathan."
"Understood sir." Kelly said, using the same word her boss had used
seconds before. "I'll call once i find out anything."
"You do that Kelly, I have to call Yuma and tell him."
Kelly grimaced, she didn't envy him that chore. "Yes sir. Over and
out." she hung up the mike and flipped on the siren. As the loud wail rang
out, she quickly picked her way through the traffic, and headed towards
the Mayor's House.
Peter took the hot cup of coffee from his secretary Pamela. He thanked
her and she patted his shoulder.
"It'll be easier coming from you Peter." She said as she smiled at
him and left the office.
"It won't be easier coming from anyone!" Peter mumbled as he took a
sip of his coffee and opened his desk drawer. He took out a small flask
and poured some Kahlua into his cup.
He saw the number to Yuma's cellular phone and he took a hardy sip
of his doctored coffee and began dialing. He hoped that Yuma wouldn't pick
it up.
"Hello?" an unfamiliar female voice answered after a couple of rings.
"Randy? This is Peter Coltrane, I need to speak to Yuma." Peter felt
his stomach sink and he took another sip of coffee to try to ease it.
"Oh, hi Peter." Randy Newman, Yuma's assistant replied. "I'm sorry,
he's in a meeting. Can i take a message?"
Peter shook his head. "No I have to talk to him Randy.. its important!"
Randy heard the urgency in his voice and didn't protest further. "I'll
get him right away sir. Hold on."
Two minutes later, Yuma was on the line. "I'm here Peter. What's wrong?"
Peter exhaled loudly, his head suddenly beginning to pound. "Yuma...I
don't know how to tell you this..."
"What's happened?" Yuma asked, suddenly very afraid. "Is it my family?"
